Why remove “si” from a Spotify link?

When you share a link from Spotify, the app adds parameters after the “?” sign: for example https://open.spotify.com/track/4iV5W9uYEdYUVa79Axb7Rh?si=abc123. The link opens the same song with or without them, but the “si” isn't needed to listen to it.

According to press reports (for example, Android Authority), the “si” is a unique identifier for each time you share, tied to your account, and Spotify can connect whoever shares with whoever opens the link. Spotify also has Messages: its help page explains that it suggests people you've already interacted with, such as those who shared content with you, a collaborative playlist, or a Jam. Users have reported that shared links also fed those suggestions, even with people they only knew anonymously, for example on Discord (SC World, citing Cybernews). As far as we know, Spotify has no official explanation of the “si”.

That's why many people prefer not to leave that identifier in the links they share with strangers or in public. With this cleaner you paste the link and get the same link without those parameters, ready to copy. Everything happens in your browser: the contents of your links are never sent to Miniurl.

Removing the “si” doesn't change what you shared before or what Spotify knows about your interactions inside the app, so it doesn't guarantee that nobody will message you. To control messages, Spotify lets you reject requests, block users, and turn Messages off: tap your profile picture, Settings and privacy, Privacy and social, Social features, and switch Messages off (per Spotify's help page; names may change).

You can also clean a link by hand: delete everything from the “?” sign to the end. If the link starts with spotify.link, it can't be cleaned here: open it first and copy the full address shown in your browser. And if you also want a short link with stats, Miniurl's Spotify link shortener has an “Anonymous link, no tracking” checkbox that does this same cleaning before shortening.
